    Automated PCR Results

    Automating Classification with Machine Learning

Doing Two Days’ Work in 30 Minutes

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a widely-used method widely to amplify a small sample of DNA for analysis.  The term became generally known during the Covid pandemic, where PCR tests were the gold standard for detecting the virus.

Our client was a specialist biotechnology start-up in the UK, who were hitting bottlenecks in the interpretation of results, with laboratory staff manually classifying PCR fluorescence curves.  React AI provided an AI-driven solution which took what had been around two days’ work each week down to around 30 minutes.

    Services Provided

React AI performed a broad array of services for our client, including:

    • Analysing the existing system end to end: the data production and consumption, the wider laboratory systems, user interactions and processing.
    • Analysing the specific problem and requirements in detail: understanding the issues with classification, such as systemic problems with certain viruses which implied specific fundtionality in the app, as well as the general data meaning, variation, quality, etc.
    • Training a neural-network-based AI solution for automated classification (including level of certainty, allowing users to manually review edge cases, in turn used to further train the model).
    • Implementing a full application, with a web UI, ML model, database, etc., and automated links into the laboratory’s upstream and downstream data flows.
    • Prototype delivered as a standalone app on a local server.  After user acceptance, we transferred this to a cloud-based solution using AWS.
    • Full documentation including user guide.
    • User training.
